Which Subaru SUVs are impacted by the WRL-22 recall?
This recall impacts 2019 - 2022 Subaru Ascent Models. Subaru is recalling 271,694 Ascents but estimates that only 1% of these SUV's will have the improperly fastened ground bolt terminal.
Description of the Subaru Ground Terminal Recall WRL-22:
During assembly the ground bolt which secures the ground terminal on the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heater may not have been fastened properly. The bolt could be cross-threaded or not completely fastened. That can result in an increase in resistance that can generate heat. If the contact surface between the ground bolt and the ground terminal is sufficiently limited the excess heat could melt the ground terminal and other surrounding components. In extreme cases there is an increased risk of fire. Owners that notice a burning smell or smoke from the driver's side foot-well or dashboard area should turn off the vehicle and contact their local dealer.
What is Subaru doing to address the problem and how long will it take to fix?
Recall notification letters were sent to vehicle owner's on February 6, 2023. To address this issue Subaru dealers will replace the ground bolts on the PTC heater and, if necessary, replace the ground wire and connector holder or any other melted parts discovered during inspection.
