Learn About Your Vehicle's Differential

Our team at Evergreen Subaru takes the time to keep you informed about how to keep your vehicle in optimal shape. A differential is an important piece of equipment that helps your vehicle perform at its best.

A differential is a gearbox that is located between the drive wheels of your vehicle. Many four-wheel drive vehicles have a front and rear differential. A differential works with the transmission to transfer power from the engine to the axle that turns the wheels. It also makes turning possible. When you turn your vehicle, the outside of the wheels must rotate faster than the inside of the wheels, and a differential uses gears to to allow each side to turn at different speeds.

A differential's fluid should be changed on a regular basis. With normal wear, differential fluid can break down and become contaminated. If you don't change your differential fluid, it could cause friction and grinding that may lead to costly repairs.
